Patrick Costello, M.D., F.A.C.S. has over 20 year’s experience as a board-certified ophthalmologist.  He prides himself in giving his complete attention and offering the highest level of care to each and every patient he is lucky enough to treat.  Dr. Costello treats all ophthalmic diseases and specializes in cataract surgery, micro-invasive glaucoma surgery, laser glaucoma surgery and eyelid surgery.  He performs both cosmetic eyelid surgery including blepharoplasty and lid lifts in addition to cancer excision and reconstructions, surgery to tighten the lids and performing cosmetic BOTOX and other neuromodulator injections in facial aesthetics.

He has been performing femto-laser assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) since 2016 and performs the most surgery of this type in the central NY region including Utica, Syracuse, Albany and up to the Canadian border.  He has vast experience implanting premium lenses including TORIC, TRIFOCAL and EDOF (extended depth of focus) lenses.  A large part of his practice is devoted to the medical and surgical treatment of glaucoma patients.  The evolution of the micro-invasive glaucoma surgeries (MIGS) has been so rapid the last 10 years that often by the time I update the website with the names of the procedures we do, newer and less invasive procedures have been developed.  Current MIGS prodecures he performs include:  IStent, Hydrus Stent, Xen Gel Stent, Goniotomy, Omni Visco-canulodilation along with traditional trabeculectomy surgery AND SLT laser.  Dr Costello now performs over 2000 surgeries per year and has performed over 25,000 surgeries.  He operates at both Griffiss Surgery Center in Rome, NY and A.O.Fox hospital in Oneonta, NY.

Pat returned to the Mohawk Valley from Albany, NY where he completed his medical school, medicine internship, and ophthalmology residency. During his final year in ophthalmology at Albany Medical College and the Albany Medical Center, he served as the chief ophthalmology resident. Prior to his medical training, Dr. Costello attended the University of Notre Dame and the State University of New York at Albany. In addition to his training in Albany, Dr. Costello spent time receiving additional specialized training at the Wills Eye Hospital of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA. He received additional surgical training at the Stratton Veterans Hospital in Albany, NY.

In 2012, Dr. Costello co-founded the Griffiss Surgery Center in Rome, NY.  He has been the Chief Executive and Chief Medical Officer of the center since 2017.  Initially the center was specialized as eyes only.   The center is now multi-specialty and has expanded twice and now performs over 10,000 procedures per year.

Dr. Costello enjoys teaching doctors and future doctors.  He served as a clinical instructor in ophthalmology on faculty at the Albany Medical College. He currently works in the same capacity in Syracuse on the faculty at the State University of New York Upstate Medical College and Health Science Center teaching residents.  Dr. Costello also teaches Family Practice residents at the Mohawk Valley Health residency program and works with optometry students at the SUNY College of Optometry.

Dr. Costello devoted a significant portion of his training to research. He is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery. He is also a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. In 2012, he was voted a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

His passion for healthcare and helping others stems from his childhood, as his father worked as an optometrist for over 50 years.  In addition of having an eye doctor for his father, he had several operations done on his own eye as a child.  Before starting medical school, he had already followed several leaders in ophthalmology in eye hospitals around the country which furthered his fascination of the eye and the field of ophthalmology.

The doctor’s favorite activities are spending time with his family, cycling, running, and downhill skiing. He lives in Oneida where he was raised and attended school.
